My Philosophy

Marsha in XS Hoodie

Hello, and thank you for visiting. Hugs by Kumi began as a way to help a friend navigate loss through the transformation of cherished clothing into something new. Today, this work continues as a journey of honoring our loved ones by carefully transforming their clothing into wearable memories.

This metamorphosis is inspired by the interplay of persistence and impermanence embedded in Japanese faith, tradition, and art. Growing up, Buddhist practices were woven into my family life—from daily offerings to our ancestors to joyful participation in Bon-Odori during Obon festivals. When I lost my mom in January 2024, Buddhism’s teachings about life’s continuous flow took on deeper meaning. Through her memorial service, I came to understand death not as an ending, but as part of life’s ongoing journey.

Buddhism teaches us about impermanence — a challenging concept when we naturally seek stability. We often believe happiness lies in keeping things unchanged, yet life’s dynamic nature is what allows us to grow through difficult times and appreciate precious moments. This truth was particularly poignant during my mom’s recent one-year Buddhist ceremony in our childhood home. As my cousin and I reflected on stepping into the role of the elder generation, we felt both the weight of change and the strength of continuity.

My work is deeply influenced by Kintsugi, the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with gold. This practice creates something more beautiful and resilient by highlighting, rather than hiding, the breaks. Like Kintsugi’s time-intensive process of repair, each hoodie I create requires careful attention and thoughtfulness. I deconstruct each garment stitch by stitch, honoring both the fabric and the memories it holds.

This work is my connection to the past, particularly to my mother, who brought fabric to life through her own sewing. Each transformation represents both an ending and a beginning—a way to honor what was while creating something new. I approach each piece with deep reverence, knowing I’m handling not just clothing, but precious memories and emotions.

This is far more than “just a hoodie.” Each piece is a testament to love, memory, and the beauty of transformation. If you’re on this healing journey, I would be honored to help create something meaningful from your loved one’s clothing.
